It seems like Google is about to be reminded that āthe Midas touchā eventually became less of a blessing and more of a curse.
As Google launched āAI Overviewsā this week, publishers and retailers began to ask the obvious question. What will the new feature do to referral traffic?
The folks over at Axios were quick to point out that the feedstock for Googleās overviews is, in most cases, user-generated content. They took a minute to wonder what will happen over time as Googleās overviews become a disincentive to new content creation.
For advertisers, the most troubling aspect of the new feature is that they can expect to pay the same amount for search advertising even though they know their content will appear below Googleās free summary.
Any efforts that Google makes to soothe these fears will have a steep hill to climb. The testimony from Googleās antitrust lawsuit has had time to work its way through the grapevine. Letās just say that ātrustā has become an issue.
